Francois Jurgens is a Teaching Assistant and a PhD candidate in the Department of Private Law.
He has BA(Hons) degrees in Philosophy and English Literature (both with distinction) from Rhodes University, and an LLB and an MA in Philosophy (with distinction) from UCT.
He is conducting research on the theoretical foundations of the South African law of defamation. He has given talks on aspects of his research at the University of Edinburgh, the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law, Hamburg, Germany, and the University of Cape Town.
In 2016, Francois worked as a research assistant to Professor Reinhard Zimmermann at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law, Hamburg, Germany. Prior to that, he worked as a Teaching Assistant in the Department of Private Law, UCT, as a tutor in the Department of Philosophy, UCT, and as a tutor and teaching assistant in the Department of Philosophy at Rhodes University, Grahamstown.
He tutors South African Private Law: System and Context, and Law of Persons and Family.
