Fatima Essop


Fatima Essop obtained her LLM from the University of Cape Town in 2000 and practised as an attorney in public interest litigation at the Legal Resources Centre and Women’s Legal Centre in Cape Town.  In 2003, she joined the Cape Bar as an Advocate of the High Court of South Africa where she practised in various areas of law, including administrative law, constitutional law and environmental law.

In 2016, she obtained a degree in Islamic law and also qualified as a Certified Islamic Finance Executive™ with the Ethica Institute of Islamic Finance. Fatima is currently a lecturer in the Private Law Department at the University of Cape Town where she is also pursuing her PhD on the intersection between South African and Islamic laws of succession.
